Make Cortana Perform Custom Tasks On Windows 10: A Step-By-Step Guide

Although the assistant can be handy, it's still limited to the tasks it can perform. For example, you can use voice commands to execute various power options, but there isn't a command to put your PC into hibernation or sleep mode. Further, while you can use commands to open a specific section in the Settings app, Cortana can't change a particular setting on its own.

The OOBE flow is also designed to reduce cognitive load significantly by breaking up tasks into discrete chunks. Although there are several pages in the OOBE flow, each one requests a specific action or input from the user. This is helpful for our average customer (and even many power users) and has shown to reduce fatigue significantly.

Great tutorial. My question is, how can you make the start menu layout permanent? In other words, if a user tries to remove or add a tile, when the device reboots, I want the start menu layout to stay the way it was customized. I know you could control it through group policy, but would rather it be completely done when imaging the workstation through SCCM.

In the midst of all the chaos, Microsoft managed to release Cortana for Windows 10 in 2015, as well as for iOS and Android devices and the Xbox gaming console. In Windows 10, Cortana was part of the Windows setup process, and for several years the digital assistant was directly integrated with the Windows Search box. You could perform a search of your computer or the web by speaking or typing, and results were delivered in a Cortana pane. Beyond searching, you could ask Cortana factual questions or perform tasks like adding appointments to your calendar, sending reminders, creating lists, opening apps on your computer, checking the weather, displaying the latest news, and more.

If your taskbar is looking cluttered -- because you love having 64 Firefox windows open at once -- maybe it's time to customize your taskbar buttons. Right-click the taskbar and click Settings. Under Combine taskbar buttons, click the dropdown menu and choose your flavor: Always, hide labels (this will combine one program's windows into one taskbar button); When taskbar is full (this will only combine a program's windows into one taskbar button when there's no more room on the taskbar); or Never.

Windows 10 is the most powerful operating system that Microsoft has ever made, but it's also the most complex. While the user interface is extremely intuitive, you'll have to dig a little deeper to customize your experience, get maximum performance and make the most of features such as the Cortana voice assistant, Edge browser and multiple desktops.

The default Microsoft browser is blazing fast and dead simple. Here's how to perform a variety of tasks in Edge, from common actions like blocking pop-ups, managing favorites and clearing cookies to tweaking key settings like the default search engine or crash-recovery options.

Similar to Siri and Google Now, you can talk to this virtual assistant with your computer's microphone. Cortana can answer questions like What's the weather like today?, perform simple tasks like remind you to take out the trash, and much more.

Instead of keeping everything open on the same desktop, you can move some of your windows to a virtual desktop to get them out of the way. And the new Task view feature makes it easy to manage all of your open windows.

Cortana is Microsoft's personal digital assistant. In a similar way to Apple's Siri on iOS, it can search the web to answer questions, set reminders and manage your calendar. It made its first appearance on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, but in Windows 10 Cortana is built straight into your desktop, allowing you search your PC and much more, using your keyboard or a microphone. By default, Windows 10 uses Microsoft's own Bing search engine to provide results, but if you'd rather it used Google, don't worry as we're here to help and can show you how to switch to make it use Google instead. Of course, we'll show you how to do everything else with Cortana, explaining how it's a powerful tool that you can use for a huge range of tasks.

You can use Desktop Reminder to set up reminders for tasks as well as events. There is a built-in calendar where I was able to see all the tasks that were pending on a given date. What makes it useful though is its capacity to remind you, weeks or months in advance, about an important task based on the urgency level you had set.

Is it possible to create custom windows features? for instance add new buttons to the start menu or maybe a button on the task bar like the Cortana button. Even add a new button to windows explorer. If it is can someone please point me in the right direction as google doesn't seem to return any helpful results

Such tasks, historically performed by a personal assistant or secretary, include taking dictation, reading text or email messages aloud, looking up phone numbers, scheduling, placing phone calls and reminding the end user about appointments. Popular virtual assistants currently include Amazon Alexa, Apple's Siri, Google Assistant and Microsoft's Cortana.

Though this definition focuses on the digital form of virtual assistants, the term virtual assistant, or virtual personal assistant, is also commonly used to describe contract workers who work from home doing administrative tasks typically performed by executive assistants or secretaries.

Tomorrow's virtual assistants will be built with more advanced cognitive computing technologies, which will allow a virtual assistant to understand and carry out multistep requests and perform more complex tasks, such as making a plane reservation.

A typical PC build has a number of dials you can tweak and changes you can make to modify performance characteristics. These are the few things I generally recommend everyone do, with a few caveats noted. Most of these are also the things I do on my own workstation builds before I ever get recording or measuring.

Will this make the PC perform better? Maybe, but not necessarily. Reducing the number of components will help with debugging, and will provide you more options for allocation of slots/resources on the board.

To generate the AppX package, the electron-windows-store CLI uses a templatethat should work for most Electron apps. However, if you are using a custominstaller, or should you experience any trouble with the generated package, youcan attempt to create a package using compilation with a Windows Container - inthat mode, the CLI will install and run your application in blank Windows Containerto determine what modifications your application is exactly doing to the operatingsystem.

Last but not least this month, Microsoft has started to roll out a new version of Your Phone that includes the Calls feature. Calls lets you make phone calls directly from your PC. Calls was previously only available on Insider builds but it is now rolling out to everyone with Windows 10 19H1 or later. With calls, you can perform the following actions on your PC:

So I've tried a few different things here to rectify the problem. First, as per your advice and steps CSand, I verified that I had HideShell=YES added to my custom settings.ini file (I had done this previously, but verified it again just to make sure I didn't mistype it somehow). Second, I went ahead and tried Fred's fix of commenting out line 132 (and/or 125).

Anyhow best of luck with it all. I hope you understand, I just physically don't have the time to support every possible custom use case, so I have to limit my support to issues with the script itself and the specific use case I designed it around. If you would like to make another how-to of MDT including user state restores then by all means please do so, I would happily add it in with the other links here in the group :) I am happy to see people getting mileage out of it in all these different ways! 2ff7e9595c
